Alvin Ailey's standing ovation

The globally acclaimed Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater received a standing ovation at their gala performance on Thursday 3 September 2015 at Mostecasino, Johannesburg. It's no surprise, as the New York-based dancers are the definition of strength, grace, power and precision.

Every one of the pieces performed was audibly breathtaking. Striking costumes and meticulously choreographed performances effectively boasted every rippling muscle in the dancers' bodies as they weightlessly leapt through the air or balanced on the edge of every dancers' dream.

The mesmerising Polish Pieces showcases Dutch choreographer Hans van Manen's genius in combining colour and patterns with rhythm. A kaleidoscope of dynamic dance culminates in two sensual, emotionally charged pas de deux.

The dynamic Yannick Lebrun performed Artistic Director Robert Battle's energetic solo Takademe with great athleticism and an equally high spirit. Seldom has a range of emotions been so sincerely expressed by any performer, leaving the audience in awe and inspired.

Grace, choreographed by Ronald K. Brown, transports one to the spiritual roots of African-American culture. The dancers' enthusiasm and passion is visibly clear in this piece that's injected with energy.

The highly acclaimed American classic Revelations is Alvin Ailey’s signature masterpiece. It is a tribute to Ailey’s heritage, exploring moments of deepest grief and joy.

The ballet piece ‘Fix Me, Jesus’ is transfixing. Linda Celeste Sims is the epitome of grace and strength, arousing gasps from the audience as she pivots in arabesque, perfectly balanced. One should not underestimate the strength of her dance partner Glenn Allen Sims, as many non-dancers so often do. It takes a great amount of agility, strength and focus to partner a ballerina with such grace and effortlessness.

The show closes with the toe-tapping, uplifting ‘Rocka My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham’, leaving no doubt in any audience members’ mind that Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater is a unique, inspirational modern dance Company that celebrates the human spirit though African-American culture and the power of American modern dance tradition. Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater deserves its reputation as one of the world’s most popular modern dance companies.

Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater will be performing in South Africa as follows:

Caring corporates invest in education of Diepsloot schoolchildren

Tsogo Sun’s flagship entertainment property, Montecasino, in partnership with Servest, Bidvest Prestige, Trango Risk Management, Letlapa First Park, and Da Tasty TakeAways recently handed over an Audio-Visual Mobile Library to the Grade 0 to 3 classes of the Akani Primary School in Diepsloot.

Ryan Nicholas (Operations Manager of Montecasino), Glenn Joseph (General Manager of Montecasino),
Deidre Jameson (Montecasino Property Manager) and Mama Doreen (Principal of Akani Primary School),
 with the donated Audio-Visual Mobile Library and some of the happy students.

In line with their innovative CSI strategy – which has as one of its main focus areas the education of children in the Diepsloot area, and specifically the students of the Akani Primary School, whom Montecasino staff have adopted as their own – Montecasino is proud to have been the driving force behind the donation of the Mobile Library which includes:

· 32” built-in flat screen television;
· 500 educational and fictional books – with 10% of those in indigenous languages, ensuring that the non-English speaking students see themselves represented in the community;
· A DVD player;
· 25 educational DVDs.

Says Montecasino General Manager Glenn Joseph:  “Education, and along with it community development, is a core element of Montecasino’s strategic plans and a philosophy that is very much a part of the Tsogo Sun Learning Academy ethos. We saw the need for a library resource within Akani Primary School and felt an obligation to fill the gap. Libraries are important elements in child development; through books and other educational resources children learn to share, to be engaged in their communities, to participate in the arts, and to explore their immediate world and the world at large.”

Montecasino staff members pledge their own time and money to the Akani Primary School, and take great pride in raising the funds needed to add to the students’ lives. In addition to the financial funding provided to the school, Montecasino staff members have a calendar in place for the year, aimed at exposing the children to experiences that a more privileged child might enjoy, such as outings to the Montecasino Bird Gardens and tickets to many of the spectacular shows taking to the stage at the Teatro at Montecasino, and a Christmas party for the children.

“We want to give these children a better chance at making the most of their lives and give them a strong foundation from which to grow.  If we can make a real difference in the lives of a handful of children, then we will have made a meaningful contribution to society. Our only hope is that the donation of this mobile library can go a long way in ensuring that the children of the Diepsloot Akani Primary School are able to benefit from a facility the school would not otherwise be able to afford,” concludes Joseph.

Amazing Acrobatics

Cirque Éloize: iD

Gone are the days of stuffy, dusty tents. Cirque Éloize redefines the acrobatics acts of a traditional circus as the acrobats bring dramatic performances to the stage, combined with energetic urban dancing and death-defying stunts.

We had the amazing opportunity to watch this extraordinary showcase of athleticism and strength. It left us giving new meaning ‘spectacular’, ‘magical’, ‘breath-taking’ and ‘heart-stopping’.

Cirque Éloize makes acrobatics relevant for today by adding elements of street culture combined with everything that makes for great theatre - well chosen music, funky costumes, incredible lighting, a cleverly used set and choreography like none we’ve ever seen before - clever, flawless and seemingly effortless. The performers fuse their unbridled talents with non-stop action to make Cirque Éloize: iD a seriously not-to-missed
show of a lifetime!

We cannot emphasise enough how incredible this show is. We can’t stop talking about it either. We look forward to seeing Cirque Éloize in South Africa in future.

Montecasino Bird Gardens boosts conservation with a first for South Africa and Gauteng

PRESS RELEASE

Ring-tailed lemur

Bearing fruit to its ongoing conservation efforts, the Montecasino Bird Gardens has over the past few months successfully hand-reared three Mexican Beaded Lizard hatchlings (which is a first for South Africa), three Southern Ground Hornbill chicks and a baby Ring-tailed Lemur, all of which are endangered species. The hatching of a baby Eastern White Pelican adds to the growing number of success stories for the Bird Gardens breeding programme.

To contribute to the continued presence of the Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum horridum) in South Africa three eggs, laid in the Gardens, were collected for artificial incubation. It was an agonizing 179 days of waiting, but on 31 August the first of the three eggs began hatching. Over a period of three days, all the neonates, weighing between 33 and 44 grams and measuring roughly 16cm, made their appearance.

“It’s a process, but one to which we are certainly committed,” says Property Manager of Montecasino, Deidre Jameson. “The Mexican Beaded Lizard has been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1975. The successful breeding of our three hatchlings was a first for South Africa and an achievement of which we are very proud.”

Another first for the Gardens and for Gauteng was the successful rearing of Penelope, the Eastern White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus). Penelope hatched under her mom and at four days old was pinioned, transpondered and a blood sample was sent away for DNA sexing. At this stage, Penelope weighed a mere 233 grams, but she has grown very quickly under the watchful eye of her very loving and protective parents. Very dark in colour at first, Penelope, is now two months and 26 days old and is becoming lighter in colour and losing her juvenile feathers.

Baby pelican
The first Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) chick of 2013 has also hatched. There are only 1500 Southern Ground Hornbills in Southern Africa and only 416 breeding pairs. The species is extremely threatened and within South Africa they have been considered endangered due to various threats, including secondary or accidental poisoning, electrocution, live trade, and traditional uses.

“Soon these birds will be listed as ‘critically endangered’ in South Africa if extreme action is not taken, which is why, at the Montecasino Bird Gardens, we are proud to be part of the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project. The project protects existing wild populations and aims to reintroduce Southern Ground Hornbills in to areas where they have become locally extinct and to date the Montecasino Bird Gardens has hatched and hand-reared seven chicks. After fledging, these chicks are sent to ‘bush school’ before being released into the wild,” continues Jameson.

Another exciting addition came in the form of a baby male Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) named Amby. Weighing roughly 70 grams at birth, and spending about a week being carried upside down while holding onto mom’s chest, the arrival of Amby brings the number of lemurs that can be seen at the Montecasino Bird Gardens to six – four males and two females.

Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar and some species are near extinction as deforestation on the island continues to create problems for the conservation of the biodiversity. Ring-tailed Lemurs have a gestation period of 135 days. In three years’ time Amby should be mature enough to start a family of his own.

“We are very proud of the achievements of the Montecasino Bird Gardens and of the specialised care it provides to the over 1000 bird, reptile and mammal species housed at the Gardens, many of which are rare or endangered. The Montecasino Bird Gardens, like the rest of the precinct, is strongly environmental and conservation-focused and Montecasino invests heavily into the breeding, educational and rehabilitation programmes, while also being a delight for every visitor, young and old,” says Glenn Joseph, General Manager of Montecasino.

The Montecasino Bird Gardens is open to the public every day, excluding Christmas day. Through its children’s holiday programme and special events, the Bird Gardens fulfils an important role in environmental awareness and provides a tranquil and fun-filled environment for the whole family. For further information on the Montecasino Bird Gardens please visit www.montecasino.co.za.
