Supernova, the mag for curious kids: volume 3.2

Supernova vol. 3.2
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Writing is one of the toughest things to do. Many people don't realise how much planning, thought, editing and gruelling hours go into writing a story. That is why we find it a little disappointing when great stories, whether written or oral, are changed or adapted, mostly to suit the audience of the time. Great ideas and creativity of masterminds are lost. We like to keep it, well, 'real'.

This is why this issue of Supernova delves into the dark forests of the little known original telling of the classic tales. Did, for example, the little mermaid really live happily ever after? Did Cinderella really just leave her evil stepmother and sisters in peace after she married Prince Charming? We think you can handle the truth, so you'll just have to read this issue of Supernova to find out more.

This issue is also packed with great ideas to keep you busy this summer holiday – make a shark attack snack from a watermelon, create your own treasure hunt, organise a flash mob, learn to surf and so much more.

So, go on, we know you're curious. Get your copy of the latest issue of Supernova today and get your nose stuck in for some serious holiday fun!

A hero's departure

BK Publishing pays tribute to the father of the Rainbow Nation.

The entire world is moved by the death of Nelson Mandela – a hero of the people, the father of a nation and an icon of peace, love and equality. On the 5th of December 2013 the world bid farewell to our hero and inspiration, who passed away at the age of 95. His legacy will impact and be remembered by many generations to come. Along with the rest of the world, we feel blessed to have had the opportunity to be inspired by the love, forgiveness and strength that Madiba embodied.

Mandela was born in a village called Mveso in Umata. When he moved to Johannesburg, where he studied to be a lawyer and founded the ANC youth league, little did he know that he was at the beginning of a journey that would change the lives of millions.

As the leader of a resistance movement Nelson Mandela was sentenced to life in prison. In total, he spent 27 years in prison until his release in 1990. He then entered into negotiations with President F.W. de Klerk to abolish Apartheid and establish multi-racial elections in 1994, in which he led the ANC to victory and became South Africa’s first black president.

What is the most remarkable about Nelson Mandela is not the different titles he acquired during his life - 'political activist', 'prisoner' or 'president', but rather the values he embodied within each situation. While being oppressed by the law, he showed passion, courage and hope within a situation that showed little prospect of success. As a prisoner, he showed patience and dignity despite his hopeless situation. As president, he embodied forgiveness, love and the willingness to forget the past, and he treated his success with humility and a
                                                                                 good sense of humour.

Mandela did not only claim to stand for peace and equality, but he also proved it through his actions by peacefully terminating the Apartheid regime and laying the foundations for a new, democratic South Africa.

No one is born hating another person... People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human than its opposite.” We are forever grateful towards Nelson Mandela for setting the example of living a life of love and peace. May we continue to learn from his example and the legacy we have been blessed with.

Rest in peace Madiba. We will remember you always.

Montecasino Bird Gardens boosts conservation with a first for South Africa and Gauteng

PRESS RELEASE

Ring-tailed lemur

Bearing fruit to its ongoing conservation efforts, the Montecasino Bird Gardens has over the past few months successfully hand-reared three Mexican Beaded Lizard hatchlings (which is a first for South Africa), three Southern Ground Hornbill chicks and a baby Ring-tailed Lemur, all of which are endangered species. The hatching of a baby Eastern White Pelican adds to the growing number of success stories for the Bird Gardens breeding programme.

To contribute to the continued presence of the Mexican Beaded Lizard (Heloderma horridum horridum) in South Africa three eggs, laid in the Gardens, were collected for artificial incubation. It was an agonizing 179 days of waiting, but on 31 August the first of the three eggs began hatching. Over a period of three days, all the neonates, weighing between 33 and 44 grams and measuring roughly 16cm, made their appearance.

It’s a process, but one to which we are certainly committed,” says Property Manager of Montecasino, Deidre Jameson. “The Mexican Beaded Lizard has been listed in the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) since 1975. The successful breeding of our three hatchlings was a first for South Africa and an achievement of which we are very proud.”

Another first for the Gardens and for Gauteng was the successful rearing of Penelope, the Eastern White Pelican (Pelecanus onocrotalus). Penelope hatched under her mom and at four days old was pinioned, transpondered and a blood sample was sent away for DNA sexing. At this stage, Penelope weighed a mere 233 grams, but she has grown very quickly under the watchful eye of her very loving and protective parents. Very dark in colour at first, Penelope, is now two months and 26 days old and is becoming lighter in colour and losing her juvenile feathers.

Baby pelican
The first Southern Ground Hornbill (Bucorvus leadbeateri) chick of 2013 has also hatched. There are only 1500 Southern Ground Hornbills in Southern Africa and only 416 breeding pairs. The species is extremely threatened and within South Africa they have been considered endangered due to various threats, including secondary or accidental poisoning, electrocution, live trade, and traditional uses.

Soon these birds will be listed as ‘critically endangered’ in South Africa if extreme action is not taken, which is why, at the Montecasino Bird Gardens, we are proud to be part of the Mabula Ground Hornbill Project. The project protects existing wild populations and aims to reintroduce Southern Ground Hornbills in to areas where they have become locally extinct and to date the Montecasino Bird Gardens has hatched and hand-reared seven chicks. After fledging, these chicks are sent to ‘bush school’ before being released into the wild,” continues Jameson.

Another exciting addition came in the form of a baby male Ring-tailed Lemur (Lemur catta) named Amby. Weighing roughly 70 grams at birth, and spending about a week being carried upside down while holding onto mom’s chest, the arrival of Amby brings the number of lemurs that can be seen at the Montecasino Bird Gardens to six – four males and two females.

Lemurs are endemic to Madagascar and some species are near extinction as deforestation on the island continues to create problems for the conservation of the biodiversity. Ring-tailed Lemurs have a gestation period of 135 days. In three years’ time Amby should be mature enough to start a family of his own.

We are very proud of the achievements of the Montecasino Bird Gardens and of the specialised care it provides to the over 1000 bird, reptile and mammal species housed at the Gardens, many of which are rare or endangered. The Montecasino Bird Gardens, like the rest of the precinct, is strongly environmental and conservation-focused and Montecasino invests heavily into the breeding, educational and rehabilitation programmes, while also being a delight for every visitor, young and old,” says Glenn Joseph, General Manager of Montecasino.

The Montecasino Bird Gardens is open to the public every day, excluding Christmas day. Through its children’s holiday programme and special events, the Bird Gardens fulfils an important role in environmental awareness and provides a tranquil and fun-filled environment for the whole family. Free by Cotton On arrives in South Africa

PRESS RELEASE

Cotton On is thrilled to announce its new label designed specifically for 9-14 year olds, Free by Cotton On will now be available in South Africa when it launches in the Sandton City store in Johannesburg on 1 December 2013.

Free by Cotton On caters to free-spirited, independent-minded boys and girls who have outgrown the kids range and are too young for adults, but want to wear a brand that allows them to express their individuality and have fun with their fashion.

Signature Free by Cotton On looks include cool Aztec embodied knits, chambray denim shirts and dresses, chinos, graphic t-shirts and leggings, all in fresh and exciting patterns and colours.

We decided to launch Free by Cotton On in South Africa after we saw a clear gap in the market and customer demand for age-appropriate, affordable and stylish fashion essentials for the 9-14 year old ‘in between’ age group. The brand so far has had an overwhelmingly positive response in Australia and we hope the kids of South Africa are just as excited as we are to now be here” Cotton Kids General Manager Natalie Mclean says.

Free by Cotton On will make it easy for South African parents who struggle to make a transition from Cotton On Kids to finding a brand that they feel is appropriate for their “tweens” to wear. To view the latest Free collection visit http://shop.cottonon.com/free-by-cottonon/, or visit Cotton On at Shop L305, in Sandton City Shopping centre, Cnr Rivonia Road and 5th Street, Sandton Johannesburg.

To celebrate the new range launching in Cotton On Sandton (and the completion of the extension and refurbishment of the store), there will be a number of entertaining activities over the opening weekend, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 December. There will be high-profile DJ’s playing in-store and interactive activations, such as a social photo-sharing booth, a customization station enabling consumers to personalize their purchases, as well as some yummy treats and refreshments…

Morvite advises on how to prepare for final exams

PRESS RELEASE

The year is coming to an end and many students will be preparing for the upcoming end of year exams. Although this can be a stressful time, the right attitude and approach can make all the difference. Morvite shares some tips on how exercise, food and drink, sleep, proper time management, and a good attitude and support system can make this difficult time easier.

Exercise is not only good for keeping healthy and fit. It also promotes brain health by increasing the flow of blood to the brain, as well as improving circulation to the heart and the rest of the body. Exercise also stimulates the growth of nerve cells in the part of the brain involved in memory and has additional benefits, such as being a temporary diversion to stress. "Walking around the block is a good way to get the blood flowing and help students to refresh, so set time aside in your studying schedule to get out of the house,” says Mate Mamabolo, Senior Brand Manager Morvite.

Starting the day with a healthy breakfast is something to which all students should be accustomed. This is because breakfast is the most important meal of the day. Having a wholesome breakfast means you have the best start to your day, and it is linked to many health benefits like improved mental ability, heart health and better weight management. Morvite Instant Porridge is an ideal start to your day as it is filling, affordable and convenient. Morvite doesn’t require cooking so you won’t be wasting precious study time in the kitchen. Keeping hydrated is also very important especially in this warm weather. Students should remember to drink plenty of water throughout the day and not only when they are feeling thirsty.

Most teens need about eight and a half to nine hours of sleep each night. The right amount of sleep is essential for students who want to do well in their exams. Morvite suggests that to ensure a good night’s sleep, students should aim to get into a routine of going to bed around the same time every night, get regular exercise, and avoid stimulants such as beverages with caffeine after 4pm. They should try to relax their minds before going to bed, unwind by keeping the lights low, avoid napping too much or for too long during the day, and create the right sleeping environment such as playing peaceful music.

One of the most important aspects of getting ready for exams is for students to be able to manage their time effectively. "The best thing would be to draw up a schedule of study times which also makes allowance for break time so that you can include socialising with friends, exercising and other hobbies,” says Mamabolo. Following this timetable is important. Students should try to keep a systematic sleeping and eating time also because irregularities can become an excuse for not studying.

Positive thinking and a general good attitude also plays a part in coping well with exams. Students should have goals that they are working to achieve as this will keep them motivated. Students are likely to do well and cope better with exams if they have a support system in place. This will mainly be family, friends and teachers who will know and value the importance of lending a helping hand in this stressful time.

Prepare for your final revision by making summaries for each subject. Try not to speak to too many other students just before the exam as they may make you feel nervous.  When it comes to the exam, read the instructions on the front of the paper carefully and make sure you know how many questions you should be answering. Read through the whole exam carefully before you start. Make sure you leave enough time before the end of the exam for proofreading and sense checking of your answers. Always, read the question twice to make sure that you fully understand the answer which is required. Identify the keywords before you answer the question and highlight these words, even for multiple choice questions. If you know an answer straight away, complete it and move to the next one. If a question is a little challenging, move on to questions that are easier to answer. You can always go back to complete challenging questions later.

Most importantly, don't worry if it feels like you cannot remember your work, it usually means that you are just feeling a little nervous. Take a deep breath, trust yourself and focus on the task at hand,” concludes Mamabolo.

happy.me™ launch their first retail Bubble Tea bar

The Supernova team loves a lovely cuppa! We're all about healthy living too, so we can't wait to try happy.me™ Bubble Tea!

Discover the sensation that is Bubble Tea

All I can be is ME, whoever that is”
- Bob Dylan -

Only two eccentric adventurers could conjure up a quirky mascot with a human personality to embody the spirit of their new chain of Bubble Tea outlets, happy.me™.

Pink Lemon & Lime
Jan and Jay Roode invented Mighty Eckhardt (ME), as the face of the happy.me™ brand. ME is an average Joe, escaping from the daily grind and finding sanctuary and happiness in the happy.me™ world. He rocks to legends like Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin and Elvis. Think Gary Larson’s Far Side and Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy and you’ve got some idea of ME’s reading preferences (yes, a mascot who reads!), as well as his sense of humour.

We love quirky humour, adventure, extraordinary people and places,” said Jan and Jay, who spend their spare-time flying through Africa in their light aircraft, creating aerial photographic artworks that have been published by magazines like National Geographic. They’re equally passionate about their dislikes: “We hate mediocrity, settling for the average, being plugged in.”

Milky Strawberry
So with such expressive thoughts on life, the universe and everything else, Jan and Jay created their own recipes for their favourite drink: Bubble Tea. “We first tried Bubble Tea in Hong Kong, and it was the best drink we had ever tasted,” said Jan. Far from settling for what the rest of the world offers, they took Bubble Tea to the next level. As Jan explained, “It started with a dream, a dream to create the world’s best beverage company. We spent three years travelling from the remote coffee regions of South America onto the exotic tea plantations of the East to find the best beverages these cultures have to offer. We tried and tested hundreds of drinks, trained with Tea Masters of the East and meticulously sourced the best ingredients from all over the world to finally create what is today the happy.me™ menu.”

Oreo and Cream Milk Tea Smoothie

So at happy.me™ Bubble Tea bars you’ll get the next generation of healthy drinks in a variety of flavours, from fresh Strawberry & Pomegranate Black Tea, which is packed with delicious strawberries, to wicked treats like rich Oreo & Cream Milk Tea Smoothies. Indulge conscience-free with the Green Teas and Matcha Teas which have powerful anti-oxidant and anti-carcinogenic properties, and are said to boost metabolism, reduce cholesterol and help to moderate stress. Caffeine free Rooibos, used extensively on the menu, is said to help soothe nervous tension, allergies and digestive problems.

Each drink is meticulously crafted by the happy.me™ expert mixologists, and include exotic toppings such as Black Pearls and Popping Pearls, which pop in your mouth, creating mini explosions of flavor and a very unique drinking experience. It’s just like the average Joe mascot ME, who surprises you with his deep inner philosophies on life and the workings of the universe.

And there is more...
Want the best espresso in South Africa? happy.me™ boasts the Nuova Simonelli Aurelia II Competizione, otherwise known as the World Barista Championship official Espresso Machine, and the only one currently in South-Africa. happy.me’s coffee is supplied by Origin, the artisan roasters of Africa who emphasise a hands-on mastery of all the aspects of coffee crafting. “happy.me™ and Origin, will together deliver the best espresso in South-Africa,” says Jan.

happy.me™ shops are the place to just hang out, ‘Chilling, thinking, dreaming’ and the shop décor, the drinks and ME himself all add to the curiosity of the brand.

There’s nothing ordinary about any of it.

Kids, get smart about safety

"It's time to get smart about safety," says Mr ADT.

Mr ADT offers kids 10 fast facts on how to get smart about safety
Here are 10 fast facts from Mr ADT just for you, kids:

  1. Make sure you practise remembering your full name, address and phone number.
  2. Remember 10111 - it's the number to call if you are in trouble.
  3. Ask mom or dad to put their contact numbers next to the phone so you can call
    them if you need help.
  4. Practise speaking clearly on the phone so you can tell the police or ambulance what you need if there's an emergency.
  5. Do you know how to lock the door? Ask mom or dad to show you how.
  6. Never open the door for strangers. Always ask who is there before opening the
    door.
  7. If you are home with your older brother or sister, or maybe your nanny, you must
never tell strangers who phone that mom and dad aren't home. Rather say that
mom and dad are too busy to come to the phone.
  8. Practise a fire escape plan in your home.
  9. Speak to mom or dad about what to do if someone at home has a small cut or burn.
  10. Never eat or drink medicines that you find in your home without speaking to mom
    or dad first.

"Come on, buddies, let's work together to stay safe in our homes," says Mr ADT.

Mr ADT presents a fun and educational security and safety show at pre-primary and
primary schools. For more information on Mr ADT and how you can book a show at your
school, email Tamryn Carr at tcarr.za@adt.co.za.
